How & Where to Check for Ticks: Humans vs. Animals

Where to Check: 

  • Scalp and Hair
  • In and around your ears
  • Arm pits
  • Between your legs  (Pelvic area)
  • Back of your knees
  • Between your toes
  • Any Open skin not covered by clothing
  • Around cuffs of clothing

Your Pets (Cats & Dogs)

Where to Check: 

  • Inside and around their ears
  • Around their eyelids
  • Under their arms (pits)
  • Inside belly button, especially if they are innies
  • Around waist/ hind legs
  • Between their legs
  • Back of their knees
  • Between their toes

How to Check:

  • Use a full-length mirrow to view your entire body
  • Use a hand-held mirror for hard-to-see areas
  • Take a shower within two hours of being outdoors
  • Run your hands over your skin to feel for any small bumps
  • Carefully part your hair to examine your scalp
  • Ask someone to help check the hard-to-reach ares (back of neck &  etc)

How to Check:

  • Run your hands through their fur, while gently pressing down
  • Use a fine-toothed comb to part the fur for a closer look where needed
  • Pay extra attention to where their fur is thinner
  • Check after being outdoors, where they were in grassy areas
  • Look for small, dark spots that may or may not be moving
  • Feel for bumps on their skin
